What is Paraphrase?
The word paraphrase means to express something in an “easy to understand” tone. In short, it is Rewording. For example, let us take the sentence, “John couldn’t understand Shakespeare’s texts. So he created his paraphrase of it”. Paraphrasing helps focus on ideas, avoids plagiarism, and improves writing skills. In this article, I give you everything about Paraphrasing.
How to write a paraphrase?
First, read from the source. Pay attention and understand thoroughly. Ensure you read the entire text. Refrain from skimming through the text. Even vociferous readers sometimes read only the beginning and end. And they just run through in the middle, focusing on only some lines. Speed-reading will not build a good base for a paraphrase. Therefore, you should read the entire text thoroughly.
Secondly, rewrite in your own words. Do not use big jargon. Make sure you include all the key points.
Things to avoid in Paraphrasing
Do not change the original meaning of the text while creating a paraphrase. You may use synonyms. However, keep them simple. Use quotations as and when required.
Make sure to create long sentences. Keep them small. Create an order to give clarity to the overall text. Review and record; also, you may add a reference.
When should you paraphrase?
Use paraphrases to create explanations of poems, literary works, writings with hidden meanings, etc. Also, you can use them as an alternative to quotations or to rewrite another person's ideas. Apart from this, you may also use paraphrases to support an argument or to cite evidence to your content.
What are the key steps of Paraphrasing?
After reading the content thoroughly:
Mark the key points.
Segregate the identified sentences.
Highlight the keywords in these sentences.
Start writing.
While rewording, use easy words.
Review your work.
Check if you have left any information.
What are the techniques for Paraphrasing?
The most popular technique of Paraphrasing is to use synonyms. That is, you use words that mean the same. The next technique is to change the form of words. Take the phrase “Like mother like daughter.” Here, the form of words can be changed as the actions of the daughter were pretty much similar to her mother. Also, there is another common technique, which is to change the grammatical structure. For instance, if the sentence is passive, you may change it into an active voice.
What are the Rs in Paraphrasing?
The four Rs used in Paraphrasing are READ, RESTATE, RECHECK, and REPAIR:
READ the passage and understand it.
RESTATE the key points in your own words.
RECHECK if you have included all the points.
REPAIR, that is, make corrections.
What is the rule of Paraphrasing?
The paraphrase should not have additional points other than the text. The meaning of the paraphrase should be the same as that of the source. Also, it shouldn’t leave any points included in the text.
What are the different types of paraphrases?
There are many types of paraphrases. But I will now discuss the main types alone.
The first type is Acknowledgement and Clarification. It is more like the feedback given. In this type, you let the person know that you understand or trying to understand.
The second type is the Organizing paraphrase. In this type, you deliver in a cognitive domain, which means you analyze the text.
What does the passage speak about?
The third type is Abstracting Paraphrasing. In this type, you infer the meaning. It may be listing the values, speaking the passage's intentions, or identifying the concepts discussed.
What is the difference between summary and paraphrase?
Paraphrases include all the points listed and discussed in the passage. On the other hand, the summary lists only the key points. Another difference between the two is in length. The summary is short. On the other hand, paraphrases are long and detailed.
What is the golden rule of Paraphrasing?
CREDIT. It would help if you always gave credit as and when required. Cite the sources if the idea is not yours. It can be a journal or a website, or a magazine.
What are the key principles of Paraphrasing?
There are four main principles you should follow while paraphrasing. They are ORIGINAL, ACCURATE, OBJECTIVE, AND COMPLETE. Let us discuss them one by one.
First, take the Principle of Originality. By this principle, you create fresh sentences with your own words.
The second principle is ACCURACY. Here, you make sure the paraphrase reflects the tone and ideas of the source.
The third principle is OBJECTIVE. Here, you ensure you stick to the source's content and add no new information.
The last and final is COMPLETE. This principle allows you to check if you included all the important ideas discussed in the source. And you did not leave out any point.
Things to consider before Paraphrasing
Before creating an idea from a source:
Choose the method carefully.
Ensure that Paraphrasing is the right and apt way to build the text.
Else, go for other ideas like direct quotes or summaries.
You shall always create one of the best texts by selecting the right path.
What is Signal Phrase in Paraphrasing?
Signal Phrases include the author's name and the source. These phrases are included at the end of the paraphrase. They are not compulsory. However, a paraphrase created by a professional will include signal phrases.
You may use the signal verbs to create it. They acknowledge, affirm, propose by, illustrate by, concur, find by, disclose by, speculate, admit, suggest by, conclude, explain, indicate, imply, report, state, note, observe, insist, predicts, comment, etc.
What are the features of a paraphrase?
The main characteristic of a paraphrase is to recast the original message, which shall be done in your sentence. Also, it includes several other ideas, such as supporting details. Apart from this, you should preserve the technical terms. And last but not least, the length of your paraphrase should be the same as that of the original text. It can be longer but not shorter.
Conclusion:
Best is to use a paraphrasing tool that will help you paraphrase your text in the best way possible with the highest quality.
